Swiftville

Perhaps you have heard discussions about "Swiftville" lately.  You may be wondering what this means.  Every two years Swift House transforms into its own micro-economy called Swiftville.   Students are given the options of starting their own business, working for an established business, working for the Swiftville Federated Bank, or running for Town Council.

The mini-unit begins with lessons about resume writing, business planning and balancing a check book. Students who create their own business write a business plan detailing their projected expenses (including import and property taxes and payroll) and income.  Prospective business owners submit these plans to the Swiftville Town Council for approval.  At the same time potential employers create a resume and candidates plan their campaigns.

Once positions have been established and the town mapped out, the Federated Bank starts printing Swiftles (our currency) which it loans to businesses as they start up.  Infused with cash and rich with products to sell, Swiftville itself "runs" for two days.  During this time Swifties run their own businesses and visit each other's businesses during their time off.    Lessons about management, communication, banking, money, and supply and demand are everywhere during this seven day simulation.  We will be sure to take and post photos!  See photos below from 2012.

8th Grade Science NECAP Testing

8th Grade Science NECAP testing will take place on May 14th and 15th. Students are allowed to use calculators for part of the test, but they may not use graphing calculators. Please send your child in with a four function or scientific calculator to use during the test if possible. If your child is in 5th-7th grade, we are always short on calculators, so please consider sending one in for us to borrow. Make sure that it is clearly labeled with their name! Ms. Laberge is happy to store the calculators in her room until the dates of the test if you are worried about them getting lost once they arrive at school. Thank you for helping us out with this.

8th Grade Challenge Community Panelists Needed

Swift House will be holding our annual 8th Grade Challenge presentations on Tuesday, June 10. We are looking for 16-20 adult volunteers to serve as panelists. Parents of 8th graders or younger students, mentors, grandparents, former teachers- all make for a great audience. These community volunteers will listen to approximately 5 presentations, 20 minutes each. During this time the volunteers will ask questions and provide feedback to the students. After the presentations each volunteer may join the 8th graders for a celebratory lunch. Please arrive in the Swift Kiva between 9:30-9:45 AM, presentations will start at 10:00 AM and continue to 12:00 noon, after which lunch will be served. Please contact Lisa Barland if you are able to attend.

CVU Musical Information for Fall 2014

To All CVU incoming freshmen who are interested in getting involved with the CVU theatre program, and next school year’s FALL MUSICAL - you are invited to attend a theatre meeting at CVU on Friday May 16th - from 3:15-4:00 in the CVU theatre.

Candy Padula, CVU’s Co-curricular Theatre Program Director, will be announcing the title of next year’s musical, and she will be discussing the audition process for the show. CVU strives to involve incoming freshmen in the musical, and this would be a great opportunity for you to meet Candy and get all of the information you need - first hand.

Auditions for the CVU musical take place in mid August, and rehearsals begin during the week before school starts, so it’s essential that incoming freshmen get the Audition information ahead of time.

Incoming freshmen (and parents) are invited to attend this meeting. Understandably you may not be able to make it precisely by 3:15, due to travel time from school. Candy Padula is happy to go over any information you may have missed after the meeting.

For students who may be away in mid August (at the time of the auditions) there will be an “EARLY AUDITION DATE” in June that you can attend. For those who can not attend the meeting on May 16th - there will be audition information posted on the CVU Theatre website at the end of May regarding the audition process.

To contact Candy Padula directly: email - yourtheatrenews@gmail.com

CVU Summer Camp

All incoming 9th graders are encouraged to attend the CVU Summer Camp. Enjoy the summer days while meeting the Class of 2018 at the new and improving CVU campus. It is not too late to sign up and scholarships are available.  Click here to find out more.

WSD Parent Survey

Dear K-8 Parents and Guardians,

The Williston schools are pleased to announce that this year's parent survey is now available to complete on-line. This is an opportunity for you to let us know how well we are doing, and particularly how well we are meeting the needs of your child[REN]. The more parents who respond to the survey then the more reliable and valuable the information will be, and the more able we will be to use the data to improve our schools. We strongly encourage you to participate. We will be reviewing this data in the days right before and after school gets out.

To have your input included, please complete this survey by Friday, May 16th. It can be accessed on-line by copying the following link into your web browser:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/W7X7WBS

If you need any help, would like to use one of the computers at school to complete the survey, or would prefer a paper version of the survey, please contact Cid Gause at 871-6104 or cgause@cssu.org.

Thank you,

The Williston Administrative Team

8th Grade Graduation

Dear parents and guardians of 8th grade students,

Can you believe that your child is graduating soon from 8th grade?  The end of the year is quickly approaching and it's time to start plans for our 8th grade graduation.

First Planning Meeting:  Interested parents are invited to attend a graduation planning meeting on Wednesday, April 30th at 6:30 PM in the WCS Dining Room.  At this meeting, parents will select a theme and sign-up for committees to organize the decoration and food for the reception and dance.

Graduation Date:  The graduation date will be Thursday, June 12th at 6:30 PM.  Students should report to Equinox House at 6:00 PM.  The evening concludes at 9:45 PM following the 8th grade dance in the old gymnasium.

Graduation Reception:  Immediately following the ceremony, there will be a reception in our courtyard.  We need 6th and 7th grade parents to set-up, serve, and clean-up after this event, so all 8th grade parents can enjoy this special evening with their family.  Please help us find volunteers and have them contact Jackie Parks at jparks@cssu.org.   We also will be requesting their help via the School Bell.

Reception Cost:  We ask that each 8th grade family contribute $10 to help pay for some of the cost related to this event.  Please send your $10 donation to your house teacher assistant by May 23rd.

Tickets:  Please go to the following link for information about graduation tickets.  Seating in the gym is very limited.   https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1brLKQvtAqY4LX3JpcmWrjzISPz0EPlxfkq746CCMBhw/viewform?usp=send_form

Photograph Permission:  If you do not want your child photographed for use in any of the graduation program events, please let Cid Gause know at 871-6104 or cgause@cssu.org.

Student Dress:  Students are asked to dress appropriately for the occasion: a dress or skirt for the girls and a tie and slacks for the boys.  Jeans, shorts and baseball caps are not appropriate.

Volunteers Needed:  If you are interested in helping, but can't attend the planning meeting on Wednesday, 4/30, please let Jackie Parks know at jparks@cssu.org.
Graduation Speeches:  All 8th grade students will soon be notified that they can be considered as one of our two graduation speakers by attending an upcoming on-demand writing session.  A school committee will be reviewing the speeches and selecting two students to further polish and deliver the speeches.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions about graduation.  Thank you.

Sincerely,
Jacqueline Parks
Principal
