Upcoming Events
Speaker Series: “Mindful Self-Care & Stress Reduction for Parents & Caregivers”January 30th, 6:30 – 8:30 @ WCS Dining Room
This series will be led by Williston-based therapist, Angie Ferenc, MA LCMHC.  While parenting can be full of joy, it can also leave us feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed and spread thin. In this 2 hr workshop we will explore the role of stress in our lives and the negative impact it has on the mind and body.
Big Basket Raffle: March 25th @ WCS
Williston Runs for Education: May 20th
The committee is actively seeking additional people to help plan the event. Please contact K Olsen for more info.

New FAPAC Chair Search
The FAP is searching for a new chair or co-chair at the end of this year.  Ideally the person would start “unofficially” in the next couple of months so they can attend a few meetings to see how things are run.  Stay tuned for a list of duties that the position entails.

Lake Monsters Committee Chair Search
The Lake Monsters Event is looking for a new chair.  The position involves coordinating with the Lake Monsters, getting the word out about the game, and coordinating the sales of 50/50 raffle tickets.  Please contact Shani Varricchione if you are interested.

Administration Update
Decision Packets:
4 groups voted on the decision packets that were received; the Program Council, FAPAC, WSD Board members, and WSD Administration.  The administration has sent forward 5 decision packets to the school board for budget purposes.
SBAC: The FAP reviewed the SBAC results.  One area of concern indicated by the results is a gap in the achievement between boys and girls, especially in the 3rd grade ELA.  There were also gaps with students on IEPs and socio-economically challenged students.  The administration and data teams are looking at what other measures could explain these gaps.  Our job is to shrink the performance gaps by accelerating the progress of students who are not performing as well as their peers.
#FAPAnnualFund - We want to make the Annual Fund more visible.  When Tweeting about a trip covered by this fund, please use the hashtag #FAPAnnualFund to get more visibility.

PLPs and Class Reports

You should have received your first look at the class reports via Jumprope this week.  Parents and students will have access to the Jumprope portal next week so you can see ongoing reporting, too.

Students who were in a PE rotation this year received Fitness Gram printouts this week as well, as an extension of their 1st Trimester Progress Report. This report shows their Aerobic Capacity as well as Muscle Strength, Endurance and Flexibility zones. Please note, due to an error with the software program used, the incorrect date and possibly student information is incorrect. The actual fitness information for each student is from this current school year and is correct. We apologize for this software issue.

We have asked Swift students to share their PLPs with you at home prior to our portfolio conference at school.  They should show you their goals with evidences and reflections, as well as self-evaluations on classes, their Theater Reflections and their Fall "On-Demand Writing" piece.  Students have worked hard to embed these documents under the various sections of their PLPs.

Grace L's PLP Screenshot-
Goal reflections and evidences will be found under "Academic Goal," "Citizenship Goal" and "Self Direction Goal".
Self-Evaluations and formal assessments will be found under "Reports" tab.

December 2nd

1st Trimester Communications

PLPs

Swifties started early in the trimester with the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) process, first setting goals in our conferences, then creating their e-portfolios around these goals.  We refer to these e-portfolios as both portfolios and PLPs.  Students have been reflecting on these goals and adding evidences to document their progress throughout the trimester.  They have a lot to share with you in our upcoming conferences.

Please ask your son or daughter to review their PLP with you before your parent-teacher conference.

Jumprope Reports

In addition to the PLP, you will be receiving a report from "Jumprope," the new WCS standards-based grading program.  You will see scores for learning targets in all of your child's classes on one report now!  The Jumprope report will be e-mailed as a PDF from the school next week, so please be sure you have your e-mail up to date with the front office.  You can e-mail Amy Benoit with any changes.

For more information on please see the following resources:

Portfolio Conferences

Core teachers are scheduling portfolio conferences.  Students lead these conferences by reflecting on their goals using the evidences in their PLPs, so please choose a time that works for you and your child.  We will also review Jumprope reports as well.  You can open our calendars with the links below:

Science Updates

5th and 6th graders are learning about the impacts of human activities on the Lake Champlain watershed.  This week they modeled the effects of fertilizer,  cow manure, oil leaks, and pet waste on the lake using a 3-d model on loan from the Lake Champlain Basin Program.

Hiwot adds pet waste to the model (using chocolate sprinkles)

Philip adds manure to fertilizer the fields (cocoa powder)

The class takes turns "raining" on the watershed
