INDEPENDENT PROJECTS UPDATE

Notecards, citations and first drafts-- it's been a busy week for Independent Project and 8th Grade Challenge report writing.    Swifties practiced writing organized paragraphs based on outlines with clear in-text citations.  They worked on writing hooks to catch the reader's attention and a thesis to guide their reading.  Finally, they put these skills together in their first drafts, due this past Friday.  Please check in with your son or daughter about the following:

  • Is your first draft turned in?
  • Did you proofread your writing?
  • What are you planning on doing for your visual?
  • Do you need any materials for your visuals?
This coming week students will complete the visual component of their project.  Many may choose to create a large trifold with text and images.  We can support students with printing at school,  however they may ask for help with materials such as the trifold.  Some students prefer to organize their research in a digital format.  We ask those students to also create a 3-D component as to grab visitors' attention during the Open House.  They may choose to create a model or a supporting trifold with images, or something else entirely, so long as it's tangible.

We thank you in advance for your support and look forward to seeing everyone at our...

INDOOR-RECESS GAME CART

Do you have games on your shelf that aren't being used? Consider donating them to the "Indoor Recess Game Cart" at Williston Central School.  Students access the cart when it's below zero, pouring rain, or when the playground has transformed into a sheet of ice.  They would love some new options!  Requests include Connect Four, Heads-Up, Apples to Apples, Pokeman Cards, Exploding Kittens, Throw-Throw Burrito, Spot-It, playing cards, and dice games.  Any durable game in good condition that can be played with two or more people in about 20 minutes would be much appreciated.   Drop off donations in the front office at WCS, care of "The Indoor Recess Game Cart."  Thank you so much for considering!

TEEN SCIENCE CAFE

Our next VTeen 4-H Science Pathways Cafe will be Saturday, February 8. SWIFT TO FLYNN~ "We Shall Overcome"

Wednesday, January 22nd @ 10:00 am

Paid for by the FAP Annual Fund- Click here if you have not yet contributed this year

About the Performance

"Get ready for a stirring and electrifying concert honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in We Shall Overcome: A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., featuring an array of talented guest artists and Damien Sneed, the concert’s musical leader and a gifted pianist, conductor and composer. The concert will cover a wide range of African-American musical traditions from classical music,
traditional and modern gospel, jazz, Broadway tunes and old-time spirituals. Much of the music that the vocalists and instrumentalists on stage will be performing sustained and inspired many civil rights activists in the long struggle to achieve equal rights for African Americans. Underpinning the concert will be some of King’s most important speeches. Sneed and fellow artists will perform music associated with the greats, such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Dionne Warwick, Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and DonnyHathaway, songs from The Wiz, and traditional spirituals. Forum on Single-Use Plastics: Problems & Solutions

Sustainable Williston invites you to a presentation about Single-Use Plastics.
Thursday, January 16, 2020, 7:00 - 8:30 PM, at the Dorothy Alling Library, Williston.

Lead presenter Maggie Eaton will share her experience of working on the Vermont plastics campaign since March 2019, including the passage history of the Vermont House and Senate plastics bills and how the new legislation will be implemented. She will offer perspective on why this new law is so important - how plastics get into our environment, where they go and what they do to animals, us, and the natural world. Maggie will also offer suggestions on moving forward with tips on how to live without single use plastics.
Co-presenter Ethan Hausman will answer questions about plastics recycling in our community. He can explain what makes a particular plastic item recyclable, how to interpret the “resin codes” on plastics, and can help clarify your understanding of bio-plastics and compostables.

Maggie’s background includes PharmD and JD degrees, work experience as a health and hospital lawyer and ethicist, and a personal avocation in environmental projects. Maggie lives in New Haven VT. Before returning to VT, Maggie worked on a plastics ordinance in California.

Ethan Hausman is CSWD’s Business Outreach Coordinator.
